Paramedic Science: Where to Start

If you don't know much about your topic, start with the Overview Resources page

When you first start out with a new research topic, you may not know a ton about it, and that can make searching a frustrating process. Reviewing the overview resources will to make your life easier! These sources help you answer the big picture questions such as, "How is this condition diagnosed/managed/treated?"

A few examples of questions that would be best answered by overview resources resources include:

  • "I have to write a paper about MRSA, but I really don't know where to start."
  • "How does gestational diabetes get diagnosed?"
  • "What are treatment options for generalized anxiety disorders?"

If you're ready to dig deeper, review the Specific Information resources page to find articles

Once you have a good feel for the general information related to your topic or research question, you can use some of the databases that help you find specific information. These are mostly all articles versus books or overview sources.

Here are example questions that would be best answered by specific/article resources:

  • "In patients who have recently experienced a heart attack, does participation in group exercise reduce depression?"
  • "Among newly graduated nursing students, does participation in a mentoring program increase job satisfaction and reduce stress?"
