Join us in celebrating Black History Month!
Historian Carter G. Woodson founded the ASALH in 1915 to promote the history and culture of African Americans in American society. By 1950 Negro History Week was an annual event and celebrated across the county. During the 1960s and the Civil Rights movement the ASALH and learning about black history became more popular in American History studies. In 1976 the celebration of Black history expanded to a month long annual event. The ASALH continues to promote the study of Black history in every aspect of our culture, historical contributions, and American society - past and present.
