Interlibrary Loan / Document Delivery Services: Distance Learning Services

Interlibrary Loan supports the instructional, research, and scholarly activities of current Idaho State University faculty, staff, and students by providing access to materials not owned by the ISU Libraries.

Information

Distance Library services are intended for currently enrolled  Idaho State University students, faculty, and staff who do not attend classes or work on the Pocatello Campus of ISU. These cities are considered local: Aberdeen, American Falls, Blackfoot, Chubbuck, Fort Hall, Inkom, Lava Hot Springs, McCammon, Moreland, Pingree, Pocatello, Rockford, Rockland, Springfield, and Sterling.

Book delivery to the ISU Libraries in Idaho Falls and Meridian is provided at no charge. 

Please check your local public library or nearby academic library before requesting items via Interlibrary Loan.  Many public or academic libraries in your local area may have research materials that could be of value to you.

The Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, United States Code) governs the making of photocopies or other reproductions of copyrighted material.Under certain conditions specified in the Law, libraries and archives are authorized to furnish a photocopy or other reproductions. One of these specified conditions is that the photocopy or reproduction is not to be "used for any purpose other than private study, scholarship, or research." If a user makes a request for, or later uses, a photocopy or reproduction for purposes in excess of "fair use," that user may be liable for copyright infringement.

This institution reserves the right to refuse to accept a copying order if, in its judgment, fulfillment of that order would involve violation of the law.

Request Books, Media, etc.

  • Loan materials are anything that MUST be returned to the Lending library and include:
    • Theses/Dissertations.
    • Musical scores.
    • Government Documents.
    • Newspaper microfilm.
    • Audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, and other media.
  • Standard services are provided free of charge.
  • Available only to ISU faculty, students and staff on the Pocatello, Idaho Falls or Meridian campuses.
    • Faculty, students and staff not located on a campus, please contact your local library. We are unable to send materials that need to be returned to the lending library directly to patrons. You will need to adhere to the local library's policies and procedures.
  • Monitor Requests by checking your ILLiad Interlibrary Loan Account
  • Most items arrive within two weeks.
    • You will receive a notice in your ISU email account (yourname@isu.edu) when available.
  • Due dates vary and are set by Lending library.
    • Overdue fees are $1.00 per item per day overdue.

This service is available to all ISU faculty, students or staff.

For assistance, please contact the Reference Desk, ISU Library - Idaho Falls, or ISU Library - Meridian.

  1. Open the Library Catalog and search to locate a needed item (book, thesis, dissertation, musical score, government document, or video/CD/DVD). Click on the desired title. You are now at the Full Record of the title.
  2. Click on the Request Button in the toolbar at the top of the screen.
  3. Enter your ISU (Bengal) ID Number and your Last name, then click the Submit Button.
  4.  Select Delivery Type option (radio button).
    1. Pick Up Location. Your item will be available at the selected location. (Idaho Falls patrons: Items send to the ISU Library Idaho Falls generally much fast than mail delivery.)
    2. Mail.  Note: There is a $4.00 charge for Mail  delivery.
      1. Item will be delivered to the address on file in Your Library Account. Please verify your address for accuracy. The ISU Libraries are not responsible for items sent to a wrong address.
  5. Enter Cancel if not filled by: Date
  6. Click the Submit  
  7. When you are finished requesting items, click on the Logout button in the toolbar at the top of screen.
  8. The item will be located and sent to the requested delivery location.
  9. As soon as the item is located and processed, a message will be sent to your ISU email account telling you it is available for pickup or when to expect mail delivery. You can also check the status of your request by logging in using the  Login  button in the Library Catalog. Your request with its pickup location will appear under the heading "Items Available" (near the bottom, above "Fines and Fees").
  10. Picking Up the Item. The item will be sent to the delivery location you selected. Check with the Circulation Desk at the Eli M. Oboler Library (208) 282-3225, ISU Library -Meridian (208) 373-1817 or the ISU Library - Idaho Falls (208) 282-7906 to see if your request is available for pick up. Mail delivery is via USPS priority mail to the address you typed into the Comments box. It typically takes 4-5 days.
  11. Returning the Item. Return items to the same location you picked up from or mail to the Eli M. Oboler Library, Idaho State University, 921 S 8th Ave Stop 8089, Pocatello ID 83209-8089. Please allow adequate time for return mailing or renew items as needed to avoid overdue fines. If the item was mailed to you, a pre-paid return mailing label was included with the item. This label allows you to return the item using any U.S. Postal Service mailbox. Visit the Mail Delivery Service Web page for additional information.

This service is available to ISU faculty, students or staff on the Pocatello, Idaho Falls or Meridian campuses.

Instructions:

  1. Check Library Catalog to make sure the Library does not have access to the item. If you need help. please contact the Reference Desk. If the Library has the item, please see "Request Books OWNED by the ISU Libraries".
  2. Sign in to ILLiad Interlibrary Loan using your ISU (Bengal) ID and last name. First time users will be prompted to create an account.
  3. Select your request type (Book, Conference Paper, etc.) the Top Menu Bar --> New Requests.
  4. Enter request information. 
  5. Click "Submit Request."

You will need to submit a separate request form for each item.

A renewal for Interlibrary Loan items may be requested 5 (five) days before a book is due. 

To request a provisional renew:

  • Sign in to your ILLiad Interlibrary Loan account
  • Under "Checked Out Items," click the orange “Renew” button​ next to the item you wish to renew.
    •  A temporary due date will appear in your ILLiad Interlibrary Loan account
  • If the “Renew” button is gray, the item cannot be renewed.

Interlibrary loan staff will then contact the lending library and will email you with the correct renewal due date. 

The following items cannot be renewed and must be returned to the library:

  • Items marked "Renewals Allowed: No" on the bookstrap
  • Items 4 (four) or more days overdue

Request Articles/Book Chapters

  • Photocopies/scans of journal/magazine articles or books chapters.
  • Items are yours to keep.
  • Standard services are provided free of charge.
  • Monitor Requests by checking your ILLiad Interlibrary Loan account.
  • Most items arrive within two weeks.
    • Delivered to your ILLiad Interlibrary Loan account.
      • Access via Main Menu --> View --> Electronically Received Articles.
  • Requests for items the ISU Libraries provide online access to will be rejected.

  3. Select request type (Article, Book Chapter) from the Top Menu --> New Requests.
  4. Enter request information. 
  5. Click "Submit Request."

You will need to submit separate requests for each item needed.
