Foreign Relations of the United States

"The Foreign Relations of the United States series presents the official documentary historical record of major U.S. foreign policy decisions and significant diplomatic activity. The series, which is produced by the State Department's Office of the Historian, began in 1861 and now comprises more than 450 individual volumes. The volumes published over the last two decades increasingly contain declassified records from all the foreign affairs agencies."

Public Papers of the Presidents

This series presents the public messages, papers, proclamations, and addresses of the President.  The series began with President Hoover and continues to the present.  Each President is responsible for writing an introduction to each volume (this sometimes delays printing of the volumes).  The Library has this set in the Documents collection.  The call number is AE 2.114: and the volumes are located on the 3rd floor.  This collection is considered a reference collection and, therefore, does not circulate.

Electronic access for volumes beginning with George H. W. Bush can be found in the FDsys.

Daily updates are made through the Compilation of Presidential Documents.  The electronic access to this title is from 1993 to the present.

Country Studies
Researched and written by the Library of Congress and printed by the Department of the Army, this series provides background and historical information on individual countries.  Most volumes are older as this series is no longer being produced.  The Library has the volumes in print, call number D 101.22:550- with individual numbers for each country volume.

State Department  www.state.gov (2009 to present)

The State Department website provides current U.S. policy and other information regarding foreign countries.  Use the search box on the page to find recent information.  The Department also compiles information about individual countries, formerly called Backgound Notes now transitioning to Fact Sheets.  These are easily accessed using the Country Profiles link on the home page and choosing your country.

After each change of Presidential Administration, the State Department is archived.  The archive is maintained by the University of Illinois, Chicago in partnership with the Department of State.  Not all links in archived sites work correctly.
